A clean HFS Explorer setup is mostly about preparing the environment correctly. Because the software is Java-based and may need access to physical storage, startup problems can come from the runtime, file extraction, Windows permissions or the connected device.
Prepare Java first
Check whether Java is installed and compatible with your system. A missing runtime can make the application appear broken even when the HFS Explorer files are intact.
Extract the download completely
Do not run files from a partially opened ZIP archive. Extract everything to a dedicated local folder so relative components and supporting files remain together.
Connect and identify the drive
Use a reliable enclosure or cable, then confirm the disk appears in Windows. Record its approximate capacity so it is easier to identify inside HFS Explorer.
First-run safety checks
Do not allow Windows to format the source. Choose a separate extraction destination and avoid making changes to a drive that contains important or irreplaceable data.
